{late 1980's}
it was the coffee
at the
first beginnings
of her day
and at their closures
and all the
in-between times
"piping hot"
"furiously boiling"
for dawnings and settings
for refreshing and leisure
in rejoicing and comfort
in light and darkness
in joy and sorrow
in friendship
it was
the coffee splattered
the cup now shattered
the body stroked
it was the coffee
that no longer
mattered
that told
her time was ebbing
shortened
"Can I go home now?"
were her words
softly spoken
a yes was whispered
in a voice
not quite my own
her race run well
run extraordinarily well
the standard set
the coffee told

my mother passed away
on May 9, 2003 at the age of 92
she was my mother first
friend second
confidante extraordinaire
standard bearer
constant in season and out of season
and so much
more than words can say
~ ~ ~
the twinkle in her eyes
her quiet voice
her determination throughout
her gentle grace
so missed

may your week-end
be blessed
with
grace and favor
